Ron Payne's Budgerigars - The Swindon Budgerigar Society

Swindon Budgerigar Society is one of the UK's oldest societies. Originally formed over 50 years ago as the Swindon Budgerigar and Foreign Bird Society, it changed its name to Swindon Budgerigar Society at its agm in January 2004. The reason for this was that there were, at the time, no foreign bird members in the society and it was felt prudent to concentrate purely on budgerigars. This was not an easy decision for the membership to take, but it was felt that the budgerigar members could not guarantee the welfare of any foreign bird that took part in the society's shows. With welfare being uppermost in member's minds, the decision to drop the foreign bird section was reluctantly taken.
Swindon BS is an active society with a good number of members. Monthly meetings are held, usually on the second Friday of every month, as well as shows and the society's "show piece" - the annual championship show. This show is held in early September and usually attracts an entry approaching 1,000 birds. At the time of writing, the Society has its headquarters at the Sikh Community Centre in Swindon. This is a magnificent venue, possibly the best in the country for a show of this magnitude. We also use this hall for our meetings and a smaller hall in the grounds for our committee meetings.
Monthly meetings consist of talks, slide shows and quizzes. Guest speakers travel from all over the country for the benefit of the membership and they are always warmly appreciated. The ladies of the club provide excellent refreshments at meetings and shows.
Additionally, trips to other clubs are organised (known as aviary visits) and these are thoroughly enjoyed. At various times other clubs visit Swindon BS.
If anybody wishes to pay a visit to one of our meetings or has any query regarding the society please contact me and I will be only too pleased to help out.
